I loved this book. I was fangirling throughout the entire book. I would definitely suggest this to any fangirl out there, and I’d also suggest it to anyone trying to understand what your fangirl friend is saying. Now excuse me while I go watch another season of Doctor Who.
His search is now ambiguous. Roarke has a connection with Cara, and having bent the rules several times on her behalf, is now unsure of his motives. He doesn’t know if wants to prosecute or protect her. Since he has witnessed, first-hand just how lethal she is he can only conclude that he is trying to protect her from the law.
It’s a knot of moral, ethical, and emotional dilemmas. At the same time Cara has at least as much on her plate, from the other side of the story, including surviving being shot, and her conflicted feelings for Roarke. This sounds like a tangled knot of storylines, but in the assured hands of Ms. Sokoloff, it goes down smooth. All of these issues are there, but they never slow down the narrative drive or overwhelm the plot. What a plot, too. Basically, Roarke and his team,(each one more fully realized and multi-dimensional), decide to draw Cara out into the open by a fake investigation of a new killing by the Reaper, the serial killer whom decades before ruined killed Cara’s family, ruined her life, terrorized California and set Roarke on his chosen path. However in their ruse the team discovers evidence that the Reaper really may be alive and killing again. Roarke’s superiors’ aren’t so sure, so now his team must prove that the Reaper is still a threat. Then they must stop him, as well as deal with Cara. Extra tension is provided by the fact that the Reaper works on a lunar cycle, and the clock is ticking. In contrast to all of this chaos is Cara’s part of the story. Her sections are often stripped-down, lean and menacing, and filled with dream-like logic. That is dream-like, not dreamy. Her story is told in primary colors, with primal emotions. It is also often frightening, and heart-breakingly sad. Despite her calm competence and exceptional skills at dishing out violence, she has the skills learned by a desperate person pushed into a corner. Cara deals out vengeance to those that deserve it; it is what she is, but I don’t think that she enjoys it for a minute. The rest of the story plays out beautifully, as Roarke and the team race the clock trying to trap both the Reaper and Cara. The storylines intertwine in ingenious ways: at one point Roarke is bait for Cara, and a fake Cara is bait for the Reaper. There is more, and I wish that I could spill it, if only to further impress you with Ms. Sokoloff’s skills. My ethics as a reviewer forbid this, however, no matter how great the temptation, so you just have to go out and get the book instead. The good news is that the next book in the series, Cold Moon, is right around the corner, so you can watch me walk the tightrope yet again. Other books by Alexandra Sokoloff
Both books are available on the Amazon Marketplace at great prices. Watch Me Burn is currently on special for only $.99 at the time of this posting. I recommend checking out both books in this series.

With that said, I would very much love to encourage you to read this series. It is the most adventurous series of the paranormal romance genre that I have read in a long time. This is not a laid back, let things unveil, type novel, but a get in your face, let's rock and roll, kick butt heroine action packed ride. This is a book that literally had me animated (Yes, embarrassingly as it is I actually swung my arms around wildly while reading due to a momentary lapse where I may have believe I part of the ensuing action.) This story is seriously unique in it's approach, and I've read many series and books under this genre.
This is book 3 in the series, and each book is set at a great price on Amazon. Do not overlook this book. It is a great time, and you will not be disappointed in spending you time reading this. I do need to point out that you MUST read book 1 and 2 in order to understand what is going on with these characters. Go, now and read it. Then make sure to tell someone else to read it. It's that good.
The first two books in the series are listed here for you to easily purchase on Amazon.com. Each book (Kindle version) is currently listed as $3.99 at the time of this posting.
Our "Getting To Know You" series continues with two more authors that will be present at this years An Austin Author's Affair. We love supporting indie authors because there are so many talented writers that get lost among the big name sellers. Please take a moment to read about these ladies and visit the sites provided.
Diana Castilleja
Amazon Bio:
"With more than half a dozen ebooks currently to her credit and her first print book released in 2008 to rave reviews, Diana Castilleja has kept busy since she started writing professionally in late 2004. Diana currently resides in central Texas with her husband and son. When not focusing her energy on her family and her writing, she loves to travel and haunt bookstores. She's lived in several states across the south and midwest, as well as traveling to Mexico. With moving every year or changing schools since the fourth grade to her sophomore year, she learned reading was a fast escape. The freedom to read about anything and everything has fueled her adult imagination. She is most likely currently sitting at her desk, having it out with her keyboard writing her next book."
Diana Castilleja is the author of the Aiza Clan and Shadowed Souls Series both of which are available on Amazon. You may purchase them by clicking on the above images.

Julie Morgan
Originally from Burleson, Texas Julie always had a love of books, especially paranormal stories. Julie finally took the leap to begin writing with encouragement from her family.
Having worked in IT her entire career, Julie now spends her free time writing. Living in Central Florida with her husband and daughter, her favorite pastime is reading children's stories to her daughter, especially those around animals.
In this era of advanced technology it may not seem to be the case, but the written word still has many distinct advantages over other more complex mediums when it comes to certain kinds of storytelling. When it comes to questions of “reality”, a word that Vladimir Nabokov said should always be framed by quotation marks, and what is or is not “real” you can’t beat a book Thus we come to The Experiment of Dreams by Brandon Zenner. Benjamin Waller is a Young widower living a marginal life as a substitute bartender. Most nights he passes out drunk while staring at a painting that is his last possession that used to belong to his deceased wife. His real living is being a human guinea pig for experimental drugs and medicines, and especially as a participant in sleep and dream-related studies. He gets offered a chance to work on a secret project that is designed to record a person’s dreams in startling detail. Ben is the perfect choice because of his uncanny ability in controlling lucid dreams. Things seem to be finally working well, especially since Ben has met Sophia, a woman who may finally help him move past his former wife Emily. He is making good money and is travelling around the world, staying in beautiful hotels and looking at the greatest works of art in the Western world. However…it wouldn’t be a thriller without that however. Ben starts having strange dreams that he cannot control. About places that he has never seen. There are revelations that the doctors and that staff working on the project may not be who they say that they are, and the man behind it all, reclusive billionaire Mr. Kalispell, begins to seem more and more sinister. After this, it begins to get very difficult to review, because the spoilers come fast and furious, and Ben’s dreams, and his reality, start to shift and inter-mingle. The first half of the book is interesting, because of the science more than anything else. Then suddenly come the twist and turns of a thriller, and Ben doesn’t quite know what is real and what isn’t. The doctors and staff start brandishing guns, and trading stories about Special Forces kills, and the narrative kind of slips from Mr. Jennings control a bit. The latter half of the book is more gripping that the beginning, but it also feels rushed, and a bit chaotic. One of the things that disappointed me the most is that a lot of the events of the book are suddenly no longer is Ben’s hands. This is realistic, but in some ways a bit disappointing. Heaven knows that I didn’t want to see our viewpoint character turn onto James Bond, but to have him basically sleep his way to the climax of the novel struck me as a less than ideal way to cap this tale. The characters in this book were solid, but unexceptional, the writing was transparent and got the job done. One of the most difficult parts of the tech-thriller is the science, and Mr. Zenner didn’t quite pull it off here. It didn’t slow down the plot or the action, but it never seemed quite right, somehow. When a book has a lot of questions about reality and dreams a firm solid foundation is a necessity, and I just didn’t feel like I had my feet beneath me in this book. |
