As always, Mr. Child is a wizard at filling the book with small touches that bring the setting and characters to life. Reacher’s eye for detail and studied observation recall Sherlock Holmes, without the neuroses and pretension. The action is vivid and and described with economy. One of the things I really appreciate about Mr. Child’s work is that he never makes Reacher do anything stupid to advance the plot. Reacher makes good decisions, but the outcome is always in doubt, because as Mr. Child reminds us, when the bullets start to fly anything can happen, and often does. The final details of the conspiracy are grisly, and I found it a bit gratuitous at times, but Reacher’s reaction, and his low-tech solution to the logistical problems involved with bringing the bad guys to justice are spot on. After twenty books Make Me still took me by surprise.
