I can’t really reveal much more than this without spoiling the plot, but Mr. Ralston spins a twisting but convincing story that he untangles quite gracefully. Did I mention that it’s creepy and scary as well? The townsfolk are all well-drawn and believable, and many are quite likeable, so that when some of them die, and in painful, horrible ways it’s not just horror-story cannon-fodder to prove to us that the supernatural threats are real. It’s painful, and sad, and Mr. Ralston does an exceptional job in not sugar coating it, but not going over the top into gross-out territory. The prose in this novel is similar in that it is supple without drawing unnecessary attention to itself. I am not a scuba diver but it seems like the author has done his work and the diving scenes are authentic and also very ominous. Remind me to never go scuba diving in a sunken city.
